Espresso [es-press-o]

The espresso is a single shot of rich, full bodied coffee. It gives an intense coffee flavour, intended to linger on the palate - for the "real" coffee drinker. It is made from freshly ground coffee beans extracted under a high pressure. The perfect Espresso will brew between 20 and 30secs, and will have a nice hazelnut tiger skin crema, at least 3 to 5mm thick. Ideally should be served with a glass of cold water.

To make a single shot of espresso, you will need;

  • 7g of freshly ground Douwe Egberts Espresso beans (14g for a double espresso)
  • An espresso cup (gently warmed). Ideally the espresso should be served with (if available) a shot glass of cold water

Remove & Clean
Remove the filter handle from the espresso machine and clean thoroughly with a cloth.

Rest & Dose
Place the filter handle on the grinder and then pull the lever once (for one 7g dose) or twice (for 14g dose).

Tap & Tamp
Tap the side of the filter handle to level out the coffee and then compress firmly using an aluminium tamp.

Wipe & Place
Wipe excess coffee from the rim of the filter handle and place it firmly into the brewing head of the espresso machine.

Select
Select the number of cups required. The espresso will be brewed in approx. 25 seconds.
